What to Look for When Buying Utensils for Your Baby

- Pure silicone (no BPA or phthalates) is great for babies—soft, gentle on gums, and tough enough to handle biting.
- If they’re mixed materials (like silicone tips with wooden or stainless steel handles), make sure they meet food-contact standards (check for FDA or EU CE certifications).
- Skip anything with sharp edges, tiny parts (choking risk), or coatings that might peel off.
- 6–12 months (just starting solids): Look for short handles (3.9–4.7 inches) that tiny hands can grip, soft silicone tips, and “choke guards” (flared edges to stop them from putting too much in their mouth). Spoon bowls should be shallow for small portions.
- 1–3 years (learning to feed themselves): Choose longer handles (5.5–6.3 inches) with easy-grip shapes, deeper spoon bowls, and rounded fork tines (safe for picking up soft foods).
- Textured or non-slip handles help little fingers hold on (fewer drops!).
- Lightweight designs (no heavy materials) make it easier for them to lift and get to their mouth.
- For bowls/plates: Strong suction bases keep them from tipping over during messy meals—with easy-release tabs for adults to pull off.
